Common Insurance Questions

How does insurance work?

In basic form, insurance is a transfer of risk from one party to another. For example, you can transfer the risk of causing a costly car accident to an auto insurance company. In return, you must pay the company a fee, known as a premium. The premium is paid whether or not you actually have an accident. This is how an insurance company can afford to pay large claims. By pooling the risk of many drivers, each paying a premium, the company can cover the cost of those drivers that do have accidents in a given year.

What does it mean to be an “independent” insurance agency?

Most insurance companies you hear about (the ones that advertise heavily), are either “captive” or “direct” insurance companies. That means, they typically only offer coverage from one brand of insurance – their own. In comparison, an independent insurance agent offers coverage from multiple insurance brands, mixing and matching coverage and companies to meet the needs of the customer.

What is an insurance deductible?

An insurance deductible is the amount of a loss you agree to cover before your insurance coverage becomes effective. This could be as little as a few hundred dollars up to several thousand dollars, depending on your needs. Generally, as your deductible increases, your premium decreases. That’s because it reduces the amount paid by the insurance company but, mostly, it reduces the amount of small claims that an insurance company must respond to, saving administrative and payroll costs.
